Elevating the Teaching Profession Through the North Carolina Education Innovation Lab
As a member of BEST NC since 2014, more than 25 team members from RTI International’s Education and Workforce Development and RTI Innovation Advisors divisions have provided extensive support to the organization. One of RTI’s primary efforts with BEST NC has been to design and facilitate an annual North Carolina Education Innovation Lab for over 100 education stakeholders and experts from across the state. The 5th Annual North Carolina Education Innovation Lab in September 2018 focused on making North Carolina first in teaching by elevating the profession to improve student success.
We identified and recruited 2018 First in Teaching (FIT) Leaders and worked with them to identify the career qualities they want for the teaching profession and the barriers that prevent these qualities from becoming reality. This input informed the agenda at the September event which highlighted innovations across North Carolina in response to these barriers and also offered time for attendees to reflect and discuss the barriers in more depth.
Harnessing the energy of the Innovation Lab, we extended 2018’s discussion for a second day to include a workshop solely for the FIT Leaders. The workshop, held in RTI’s William M. Moore Collaboration Center, dug deeper into the barriers that were discussed at the lab; unpacked the diffusion of innovation; and provided FIT Leaders the opportunity to engage school, district, and state-level decision makers.
In 2019, the RTI team will support the FIT Leaders as they formalize their mission and structure, and will help design and facilitate the 2019 NC Education Innovation Lab. For more information on RTI’s involvement, please contact Olivia Rice.
